Download a timer safely

A safe timer download starts with a URL you typed: GitHub Releases for vladelaina/Catime, or a verified package id such as VladElaina.Catime on winget. Refuse search ads that rename the setup and bundle toolbars.

Trusted doors only

Primary doors for this guide are GitHub Releases (catime_*.exe), winget id VladElaina.Catime, Scoop extras catime, and Chocolatey catime. Each door was checked against public manifests on the review date. Brew had no catime cask or formula, so macOS Homebrew is not a door here.

Type github.com/vladelaina/Catime yourself or use winget with the exact id. Do not trust a redirected “download timer” button on a review portal. Releases map: timer releases. Repo map: GitHub overview.

When a friend sends a Drive or Discord zip titled free timer, open Releases instead. Friendly files are a common way wrong binaries enter shared PCs. Keep one written update door beside the machine.

Filename and publisher checks

The everyday asset looks like catime_1.6.2.exe with a dotted version in the middle. Winget’s portable installer points at that family. If the filename gains words like setup-full, free-timer-pro, or softonic, stop. Those names are not on the official tag list.

SmartScreen may warn on new portable MinGW builds. Upstream SECURITY.md discusses reputation and heuristic detections. Confirm the Releases URL, then decide. Do not clear the warning by grabbing a second copy from an ad. Safety deep dive: is it safe.

Hash checks help when you need forensic certainty. Scoop’s catime.json published a sha256 for v1.6.2 when verified. Winget installer manifests also carry InstallerSha256 for the same tag. Match hashes only against those official manifests.

What to refuse

Refuse browser extensions that claim to “accelerate” a timer download. Refuse cracked focus suites that piggyback on timer searches. Refuse instructions that invent a brew install line for this Windows-only project. Refuse mirror sites that wrap the exe inside a second installer.

Also refuse advice to disable antivirus permanently just to run a countdown tool. If a binary only runs after you gut protection, you picked the wrong file. Troubleshooting: troubleshooting.

Microsoft Store may appear as an alternate distribution on marketing pages. Treat it as separate from the GitHub Releases path documented here. Do not mix Store and portable installs until you know which one owns updates on that PC.

After a clean fetch

Install once, prove one countdown, then bookmark the same door for upgrades. First hour habits live on installed. Desk-specific notes live on for this computer. Windows command detail lives on install on Windows.

Config lands under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Catime\ according to PRIVACY.md. Back up config.ini before you experiment with plugins or tray GIFs. Local storage is a privacy feature, not a backup system, so copy the file when the presets matter.

If winget cannot see the id, repair App Installer from Microsoft, or fall back to the Releases exe rather than a random mirror. Package notes: winget and packages.

Shared PC policy

On a shared desk, write the exact command or filename on a card. Include the review date. After a reimage, run the same door and prove one timer countdown again. That boring ritual beats rediscovering adware every semester.

Teachers and parents should prefer winget when group policy allows it, because the id is harder to typo into a malicious lookalike than a random download button. Scoop and Chocolatey fit machines that already standardize on those tools.

Keep the word timer attached to the job, and Catime attached to the project. Safe download is the habit that keeps both names honest.

Browser habits that help

Pin the Releases page or keep winget as a muscle memory command. Clear out old Downloads folders so an ancient catime exe does not get run by mistake months later. When a search engine shows a featured download button that is not GitHub, ignore it and type the repo path.

Use a separate browser profile for admin tasks if you share a family PC. That habit reduces the chance a shopping extension rewrites download links for a timer search. Independence and ads notes: advertising disclosure.
