Switch from online timers

You can switch countdown habits from browser timer tabs into a local Windows timer without exporting a special file. Install Catime, re-create the durations you already use, prove one overlay, then keep the tab only as a fallback.

Why leave the browser tab

Online timer pages disappear when the laptop sleeps, the tab crashes, or the wifi drops mid-meeting. Ads and autoplay videos also steal focus during talks. A desktop timer keeps the countdown on disk with a tray icon you control.

Migration steps that actually work

There is no password-vault style import for countdown presets. Write down the three durations you use most, install via winget or Releases, then enter those durations in the tray flow. Save presets once the first countdown succeeds.

  1. List your common durations from the browser tool.
  2. Install the Windows timer from a trusted door.
  3. Prove one countdown with a message timeout.
  4. Recreate presets and place the overlay.
  5. Close the browser tab during the next real block.

What does not transfer

Bookmarks, account streaks, social share buttons, and theme skins from random web timers do not move into Catime. That is fine. You wanted the countdown job, not the gamification layer. Local config.ini becomes the new memory.

Multi-device sync also does not transfer. If you needed the same timer on phone and PC, keep the phone app for travel and use the desktop overlay at the desk. Do not expect cloud sync that the Windows portable never promised.

Proof week

Run one week where every planned block starts on the desktop timer. Keep the browser bookmark, but do not open it unless the desktop path fails. After seven clean sessions, remove the bookmark or move it into an archive folder.

When to keep both

Measure the switch honestly
